My Review:
The Night Visitor is the perfect read for Halloween and has everything you could possibly want from a creepy spine tingling thriller. Ghosts, murder, intrigue and romance are all here, with the chilling suspense slowly building throughout the story.
The book opens with a young Meg who is trying to cope with the ‘gift’ her mother believes she inherited from her grandmother. But when tragedy strikes it all becomes too much for Meg and she buries that part of herself and vows never to use it again. Fast forward to the present day and Meg, a successful woman in her thirties, is still haunted by the events of the past. Troubled by a recent tragedy, she moves to a village in Cornwall where she hopes to finally lay the ghosts of her past to rest. But her presence awakes more than her own ghosts, and she finds herself in the middle of a chilling murder mystery that is impossible to escape.
I absolutely adored this book. It had just the right amount of suspense, with the creepiness building with every chapter. Meg, in spite of her past, is a strong, independent woman who I liked from the very first page. The Night Visitor has a fascinating cast of supporting characters and a Cornwall that is brought vividly to life, especially the atmospheric Bodmin Jail, the inclusion of which really added to the spookiness of the story.
With some genuinely scary moments, this really is a book that has everything. It’s beautifully written and you feel every emotion right along with the characters. The Night Visitor is the perfect read for Halloween and is one that will stay with me for a long time to come. Highly recommended.
