Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for the moving and atmospheric The Unforgotten by Amy MacKinnon. Thank you to Tracy Fenton of Compulsive Readers and Trapeze Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this lovely book.
About the book:
Let the dead stay dead.
Clara Marsh is an undertaker. She spends her solitary life among the dead and bids them farewell with a bouquet from her own garden. But Clara’s carefully structured life shifts when she discovers a neglected little girl, Trecie, playing in the funeral parlour, desperate for a friend.
It changes even more when Detective Mike Sullivan starts questioning her again about a body she prepared three years ago, an unidentified girl found murdered in a nearby strip of woods. Unclaimed by family, the community christened her Precious Doe. When Clara and Mike learn that Trecie may be involved with the same people who killed Precious Doe, Clara must choose between her solitary but steadfast existence and the perils of binding one’s life to another.
Clara’s search for the girl pulls her into a spiralling series of events that threaten to endanger the few people Clara has grown to love – and finally brings her own tragic and long-buried past to the surface.
About the author:
Amy MacKinnon lives outside of Boston with her husband, three children, two cats, and their English bulldog, Babe.
Beautifully written and atmospheric crime novel that draws you in from the very first page. Clara was a character I warmed to from the start and I loved the way the author revealed her story little by little throughout the book.
With a cast of well drawn and varied characters, The Unforgotten is a crime novel with a difference, and although I did guess the direction the story was going early on, this did not detract from my enjoyment and I was still taken by surprise at some of the twists and turns that happened as we delved deeper into Clara’s past.
Clara’s developing relationship with Mike, the widowed police officer in charge of the murder investigation, was a highlight for me and I was desperate for these two tortured souls to be able to overcome the obstacles of their past.
Without giving too much away this is a fabulously creepy novel, paired very well with a murder investigation that will keep you guessing throughout. A moving and at times heartstopping debut that I highly recommend. Amy MacKinnon is an author I will definitely look out for in the future.
