Today is my stop on the blog tour for the fantastic The Taking of Annie Thorne by C.J. Tudor. Thank you to Jenny Platt and Michael Joseph Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this deliciously dark novel.
About the book:
Then…
One night, Annie went missing. Disappeared from her own bed. There were searches, appeals. Everyone thought the worst. And then, miraculously, after forty-eight hours, she came back. But she couldn’t, or wouldn’t, say what had happened to her.
Something happened to my sister. I can’t explain what. I just know that when she came back, she wasn’t the same. She wasn’t my Annie.
I didn’t want to admit, even to myself, that sometimes I was scared to death of my own little sister.
Now. . .
The email arrived in my inbox two months ago. I almost deleted it straight away, but then I clicked OPEN:
I know what happened to your sister. It’s happening again . . .
About the author:
C. J. Tudor lives with her partner and young daughter. Her love of writing, especially the dark and macabre, started young. When her peers were reading Judy Blume, she was devouring Stephen King and James Herbert.
Over the years she has had a variety of jobs, including trainee reporter, radio scriptwriter, dog walker, voiceover artist, television presenter, copywriter and, now, author.
Her first novel, The Chalk Man, was a Sunday Times bestseller and sold in thirty-nine territories.
My Review:
The Taking of Annie Thorne is a deeply unsettling and deliciously creepy story that slowly builds up the tension throughout. It’s a page turner of a book that kept me reading long after the lights should have gone out, which considering how dark and disturbing this story is was probably not the best idea! But I just could not put this book down, it kept me enthralled from beginning to end.
In 1992, Joe Thorne’s life was changed the night his little sister, Annie, disappeared. But what changed his life forever was when she came back.
Many years later, Joe is enticed back to the place of his childhood nightmares by an anonymous email claiming to know what happened to Annie that night…and to warn him that it was happening all over again.
What follows is a dark and chilling story that slowly reveals its secrets little by little. Joe’s recent and troubled past is also trying to catch up with him, which adds even more to the mystery and suspense, until what happened that fateful night in 1992 is finally and devastatingly revealed.
I found myself racing through the pages of this book, eager to find out the truth of what had happened to Annie. Were there darker forces at work here than it at first appeared? And could Joe finally put a stop to it once and for all?
C.J. Tudor’s words flow from the page, drawing you in to this strange and spine tingling tale from the start. I warmed to Joe straight away, even when some of his not so commendable traits were revealed. He felt very real to me and I quickly came to care about his story and what happened to him.
The Taking of Annie Thorne is a brilliantly dark and chilling read that I highly recommend.
