First of all let me say how much I LOVE John Bowen’s writing! I absolutely adored Death Stalks Kettle Street, so was over the moon when I was invited to take part in the blog tour for book two of his Where the Dead Walk series, the first of which I had already read and enjoyed.
As someone with a keen interest in the paranormal and who has enjoyed ghost hunting TV shows in the past, this series is right up my street. And even though this book is the second in the series, it could easily be read as a standalone. The two main characters from the previous story are not in this one, but Chloe, a new character, is a fantastic addition and steps into the void perfectly.
I warmed to Chloe straight away, with her story being revealed slowly as we move through the book. For me, one of John Bowen’s biggest strengths lie in his characterisation, especially characters who don’t always fit in or are a little bit different. As a person who spent much of my own schooldays in the ‘freak or geek enclosure’ (as Chloe would say), this is something I particularly love about his writing. With an eclectic cast of characters, Where the Dead Walk is a deliciously creepy story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
This time the TV crew of Where the Dead Walk are invited to investigate a haunting at Crow’s Cottage, where 30 years before a famous record producer took his own life and a young woman mysteriously disappeared after attending a party there. Charles, Chloe and the gang set out to uncover the truth of what happened, but even they could never have been prepared for where their investigation would lead.
This is a book steeped in history, told in a way that keeps you interested throughout, usually from the point of view of one or more of the characters. I took particular pleasure in revisiting the 1980’s of my youth, especially as some of the people so vividly described bore an uncanny resemblance to entertainment stars of the past, something which I loved!
With some genuinely creepy moments, Where the Dead Walk is a fantastic ghost story, full of humour and warmth, with characters you can’t help but care about from the outset. If you haven’t already read the first book in the series, this book stands up very well as a standalone, but the first one is so good, why wouldn’t you want to read it? This is a series of books I highly recommend and hope to see more of in the future.
John Bowen has a warmth and empathy to his writing that will always keep me coming back for more. He has the ability to move me one moment, then make me laugh out loud the next. I can’t wait to see what this talented author comes up with next!
