My Review:

Wow, what can I say? This book completely and utterly blew me away! I’m ashamed to say that even though I have them all on my towering TBR pile, this was the first book I’d read by this author. But OMG what a jaw droppingly fantastic book to pop my John Marrs cherry with!

The Passengers is a fast paced and thrilling read set in a much too believable near future, where cars have now become fully automonous. This is a future I find incredibly believable, and as a non driver is something I’ve speculated about with my own family. But after reading this book I would certainly think twice about travelling in one now! It’s so scarily believable, and that is what makes this such a heartstoppingly brilliant and scary read.

Eight self-drive cars filled with eight people from all walks of life have been hijacked. Now it is down to the public to decide who lives and who dies. But as more and more is slowly revealed about each of the eight passengers, are things all as they first seem?

Libby is the character I warmed to the most, as she finds herself in the predicament of having to be judge and jury alongside the public. Her horror at what is happening around her is palpable and you can feel the tension rising with every page.  As the secrets of each passenger are exposed, our emotional response to each character changes as the story hurtles along at a breathtaking pace, right up until it reaches its final shocking conclusion.

In a world where we rely more and more on technology every day, what happens in this book is completely feasible to me. With twists and turns throughout, The Passengers is scary, horrifying and staggeringly brilliant. It made me gasp out loud on more than one occasion, the shocks coming thick and fast, and I genuinely had no idea how this book was going to end.

Once started I could not put it down! I was so immersed in the story that I read it  long into the night, telling myself I would just read one more chapter, then just one more. And then before I knew it I’d finished the whole thing!

I honestly can’t recommend The Passengers highly enough and it’s right up there as one of my favourite reads of the year so far. It may have been the first book I’ve read by John Marrs, but it most definitely won’t be my last!

A fast paced, original, terrifying and thought provoking tale that is all too believable, this is a book that will stays with me for a long time to come. Brilliant!
