My Review:
This is the first Robbie Munro legal thriller I’ve read, but it definitely won’t be the last. A fascinating insight into the life of a defence lawyer, Fixed Odds is a book that keeps you on your toes throughout. Although this is the first I’ve read in the series, it still works incredibly well as a standalone and I didn’t feel as though I was missing out on anything by reading it out of order. Having said that, I’m still looking forward to going back to the beginning to see how Robbie’s story began!
Fixed Odds did get off to a little bit of a slow start, but once the story kicked in I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the character of Robbie Munro and found myself rooting for him as the book progressed. I especially liked his family dynamic and how important they are to him, which definitely added to my enjoyment as it gave an extra emotional edge to the story as he tried to juggle (not always successfully!) both his work and his home life.
William McIntyre obviously knows the legal system incredibly well, which comes through in his writing in an easy to understand way, which is something I liked. Set in Scotland, the story is well paced and interesting, with a dark humour that had me chuckling, especially when it came to his interactions with his heavily pregnant wife, his daughter and his secretary. They definitely didn’t make life easy for him!
When Robbie is hired to defend a professional snooker player, he hopes his luck is about to change. This case is different to the Legal Aid cases he usually defends, but can he win such a high profile case? And will his unique way of working give him the result he hopes for? Or is he about to push his luck a step too far?
What follows is a dark legal thriller that moves along at a steady pace as it twists and turns on its way to its shocking conclusion. Full of dark humour, this is an entertaining story of deceit and lies, with a fascinating lead character who you can’t help but fall in love with.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first taste of a Robbie Munro thriller and can’t wait to see what William McIntyre will have in store for him in the future. Recommended.
