I’m pleased to welcome you today to my stop on the blog tour for the delightful It All Comes Back To You by Beth Duke. Thank you to Anne Cater and The Art of Dixie for giving me the opportunity to read and review this lovely book.

About the book:

53E51119-7B11-4CE4-A26A-1C43C7C9874C

1947.War’s over, cherry-print dresses, parking above the city lights, swing dancing. Beautiful, seventeen-year-old Violet lives in a perfect world .

Everybody loves her.

In 2012, she’s still beautiful, charming, and surrounded by admirers. Veronica “Ronni” Johnson, licensed practical nurse and aspiring writer, meets the captivating Violet in the assisted living facility where Violet requires no assistance, just lots of male attention.

When she dies, she leaves Ronni a very generous bequest―only if Ronni completes a book about her life within one year.

As she’s drawn into the world of young Violet, Ronni is mesmerized by life in a simpler time. It’s an irresistible journey filled with revelations, some of them about men Ronni knew as octogenarians at Fairfield Springs. Struggling, insecure, flailing at the keyboard, Ronni juggles her patients, a new boyfriend, and a Samsonite factory of emotional baggage as she tries to craft a manuscript before her deadline. But then the secrets start to emerge, some of them in person. And they don’t stop. Everything changes.

Alternating chapters between Homecoming Queen Violet in 1947 and can’t-quite-find-her-crown Ronni in the present, IT ALL COMES BACK TO YOU is book club fiction at its hilarious, warm, sad, outrageous, uplifting, and stunning best. In the tradition of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand and Olive Kitteridge, Duke delivers an unforgettable elderly character to treasure and a young heroine to steal your heart.

My Review:

It All Comes Back to You by Beth Duke is a heartwarming but hilarious read that alternates between Homecoming Queen Violet in 1947 and can’t-quite-find-her-crown Ronni in 2012. In 2012 Violet is still beautiful, charming, and surrounded by admirers, whereas Veronica ‘Ronni’ Johnson is still trying to find her place in the world. The unlikely pair meet in the assisted living facility where aspiring writer Ronni works and Violet lives, although the captivating Violet, now in her eighties, still requires no assistance, just lots of male attention.

When Violet dies she leaves Ronni a very generous bequest, but only if she completes a book about Violet’s life within one year. Ronni decides to take up the challenge and soon becomes mesmerised by the long forgotten world of the young Violet. What she discovers is a fascinating and well lived life that’s filled to the brim with secrets.

In her own personal life Ronni is flailing, struggling to complete her manuscript in time, while also trying to juggle the responsibility she feels for her patients along with trying to make time for her fledgling relationship with a new boyfriend. And the revelations from Violet’s past just keep on coming, some of them even in person, changing everything Ronni thought she knew about the irrepressible octogenarian she had grown to love so much.

Beth Duke has written a beautiful and moving book that’s full of the ups and downs of life, some funny, some sad, but all massively entertaining, warm and memorable. Both versions of Violet, both young and old, are simply unforgettable and you can’t help but fall in love with her indomitable spirit. The vulnerable Ronni, on the other hand, stole my heart from the outset, and it was wonderful to see her slowly begin to blossom and spread her wings as the story progresses.

It All Comes Back to You is a stunning read with characters who will stay with me for a long time to come. A delightful book that’s in turns both hilarious and moving, it is a warm and uplifting tale I would thoroughly recommend. Loved it!
