I’m thrilled to welcome you today to my stop on the blog tour for the excellent Deep Dark Night, fourth book in the Lori Anderson Series by Steph Broadribb. Thanks as always to Anne Cater and Orenda Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this fantastic book.

The fourth book in the award-winning Lori Anderson series, Deep Dark Night sees daring bounty hunter and single mother Lori Anderson journey from Florida to Chicago to take down a notorious crime family. Published to coincide with International Women’s Month, it will see the full series rebranded a fresh, contemporary new look.

Working off the books for FBI Special Agent Alex Monroe, Florida bounty hunter Lori Anderson and her partner, JT, head to Chicago. Their mission: to entrap the head of the Cabressa crime family. The bait: a priceless chess set that Cabressa is determined to add to his collection.

An exclusive high-stakes poker game is arranged in the penthouse suite of one of the city’s tallest buildings, with Lori holding the cards in an agreed arrangement to hand over the pieces, one by one. But, as night falls and the game plays out, stakes rise and tempers flare.

When a power failure plunges the city into darkness, the building goes into lockdown. But this isn’t an ordinary blackout, and the men around the poker table aren’t all who they say they are. Hostages are taken, old scores resurface and the players start to die.

And that’s just the beginning…

My Review:

Deep Dark Night, the brilliant new thriller by Steph Broadribb, sets off at a cracking pace and doesn’t slow down until the final, thrilling conclusion has been reached. The fourth in the award winning Lori Anderson series, this is a book that is exciting and fast paced, with a strong female lead that you can’t help but admire.

Although this is the first book in the Lori Anderson series I’ve read, there is just enough backstory to stop you feeling lost, so I do think it reads well as a standalone. However, this fantastic thriller has definitely whet my appetite for more, so I will be going back to read the first three books in the series as soon as time allows.

This is an exhilarating read that had me holding my breath, desperate to find out what was going to happen next, as Lori finds herself trapped in a building with a group of dangerous poker playing criminals. The building is in lockdown as the city is plunged into darkness and Lori must rely on her wits to survive as stakes rise and tempers flare.

I was drawn to Lori from the very first page, her strength and resilience making her a brilliant protagonist who you can’t help but root for. JT, her former lover and father of her daughter, is her right hand man and confidante in Deep Dark Night. He is the man who taught her to be a bounty hunter and, I have to admit, I found myself captivated by their relationship in this story and can’t wait to see where it goes in future instalments of this superb series.

Steph Broadribb’s writing is fresh and exciting, drawing you into the story and not letting go until the final, heart racing conclusion has been reached. Gripping and full of suspense, it keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, leaving you breathless with anticipation as it hurtles towards its thrilling denouement, never slowing down until the final page has been turned.

I’m excited to have found a new and thrilling series to sink my teeth into, with strong and likeable characters who I’m eager to learn more about. In Lori Anderson, Steph Broadribb has created a memorable character who I hope will be around for a long time to come.

A brilliant and gripping thriller I would highly recommend. Simply superb!
