Oslo detective Frølich searches for the mysterious sister of a young female asylum seeker, but when people start to die, everything points to an old case and a series of events that someone will do anything to hide…

Suspended from duty, Detective Frølich is working as a private investigator, when his girlfriend’s colleague asks for his help with a female asylum seeker, who the authorities are about to deport. She claims to have a sister in Norway, and fears that returning to her home country will mean instant death.

Frølich quickly discovers the whereabouts of the young woman’s sister, but things become increasingly complex when she denies having a sibling, and Frølich is threatened off the case by the police. As the body count rises, it becomes clear that the answers lie in an old investigation, and the mysterious sister, who is now on the run…

A dark, chilling and up-to-the-minute Nordic Noir thriller, Sister is also a tense and well-plotted murder mystery with a moving tragedy at its heart, cementing Kjell Ola Dahl as one of the greatest crime writers of our generation.

Translated into English by Don Bartlett.

My Review:

Sister by Kjell Ola Dahl is the latest in his Oslo Detectives series of books featuring Frank Frølich. I must admit that this is the first book of the series I’ve read, but definitely won’t be my last as I loved it so much! Nordic Noir is fast becoming one of my favourite genres to read and, although this can be read very well as a standalone, I can’t wait to go back to the beginning to see where Frank’s story began.

Now a private investigator, Frank is given the task of finding the missing sister of a young female asylum seeker. But when people begin to die, Frank soon comes to realise that there is so much more to this case than at first meets the eye. What is the significance of the cold case of a fire aboard a ship that keeps cropping up during the investigation? And where is the mysterious sister who now appears to be on the run?

Beautifully translated by Don Bartlett, the author has written a complex and well plotted murder mystery that highlights the plight of asylum seekers and the often unjust way they are treated by the authorities. Kjell Ola Dahl is an author at the top of his game and I ate up every word of this fantastic Nordic Noir thriller. Not a word is wasted as the tension ratchets up to breaking point, bringing the strands of the plot together as we move towards the final thrilling chapters.

I found myself warming to the character of Frank Frølich from the outset. He’s a fascinating character who I can’t wait to learn more about, both by going back to the previous books in the series and by reading any future ones. Sister is a dark and chilling tale that is as moving as it is thrilling, revealing a story that is relevant to the world we live in today.

A fast paced, skilfully told and entertaining Nordic Noir thriller that I would highly recommend.
