In an effort to save the life of a young woman—and possibly others—he travels to the wilderness of Washington State to investigate a mysterious organization. Is it a community that consoles the bereaved? Or a dangerous cult under the sway of a captivating leader?

As he peels back the layers of truth, Shaw finds that some people will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden. All the while, Shaw must unravel an equally deadly enigma: locating and deciphering a message hidden by his father years ago, just before his death—a message that will have life-and-death consequences.

My Review:

Shockingly, The Goodbye Man is the first book by critically acclaimed author Jeffery Deaver I’ve ever read, but oh my goodness, it most definitely won’t be my last! A fast paced and thrilling read, this is a book that kept me on my toes throughout. The author throws us straight into the action from the very first page and the story continues to grip right up until the final page had been turned.

Although this is the first one I’ve read, The Goodbye Man is the second book in this brand new series featuring enigmatic investigator Colter Shaw and I felt it read very well as a standalone. Having said that, I have to admit I loved this book so much I want to go back to the beginning to learn more about this fascinating new character!

Investigator Colter Shaw hunts fugitives for a living and, as the story begins, he is in pursuit of two young men accused of terrible hate crimes. But what starts out as a straightforward case turns into something so much more as Colter stumbles upon a clue to another mystery. He soon finds himself undercover in Washington State, investigating a mysterious organisation that will see him exposing more secrets and lies than he could ever have imagined. And on top of that, Colter also has his own personal family mystery to unravel. One that has the potential to change his life forever…

The Goodbye Man is an action packed thriller, with a superb plot that is full of twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout. I loved it even more than I thought I would, with the action moving along at breakneck speed, leaving you breathless as you race towards its thrilling finale.

Jeffery Deaver more than lives up to his reputation and I can’t wait to read more from this fabulous author in the future. The only thing I’m asking myself is why did it take me so long?!

Highly recommended.
