The first in the electrifying new Forbidden Iceland series, The Creak on the Stairs is an exquisitely written, claustrophobic and chillingly atmospheric debut thriller by one of Iceland’s most exciting new talents

When the body of a woman is discovered at a lighthouse in the Icelandic town of Akranes, it soon becomes clear that she’s no stranger to the area.

Chief Investigating Officer Elma, who has returned to Akranes following a failed relationship, and her colleagues Sævar and Hörður, commence an uneasy investigation, which uncovers a shocking secret in the dead woman’s past that continues to reverberate in the present day…

But as Elma and her team make a series of discoveries, they bring to light a host of long-hidden crimes that shake the entire community. Sifting through the rubble of the townspeople’s shattered memories, they have to dodge increasingly serious threats, and find justice … before it’s too late.

My Review:

The Creak on the Stairs is the first book in Eva Bjorg AEgisdottir’s new Forbidden Iceland series. Icelandic Noir at its very best, it’s a beautifully written and atmospheric debut that captured my imagination from the very first page. Told from multiple points of view, this is a well plotted and addictive thriller that moves along at a cracking pace, drawing on the chilling landscape of its small town Icelandic setting to keep the reader engaged throughout.

When the body of a woman is discovered at a lighthouse in the Icelandic town of Akranes, it soon becomes clear that there is more to this case than at first meets the eye. Following a failed relationship, Chief Investigating Officer Elma has returned to her home city of Akranes and, along with her colleagues Sævar and Hörður, begins to investigate the mysterious death.

But then Elma and her colleagues uncover a shocking secret in the dead woman’s past that continues to reverberate in the present day. As more discoveries come to light, the investigation team find themselves increasingly under threat as they work towards seeking out the truth… before it’s too late.

Skilfully translated by Victoria Cribb, The Creak on the Stairs is a superb Icelandic Noir thriller that is filled to the brim with intrigue and suspense. With a fascinating cast of characters and an intricately plotted storyline that will keep you guessing throughout, this is a dark and disturbing read that I enjoyed immensely. Eva Bjorg AEgisdottir’s writing is exquisite as she deftly brings the threads of the story together, leading to a denouement that is as shocking as it is satisfying.

Oh my goodness, what a brilliant start to the Forbidden Iceland series this book is! A gripping, fast paced, dark and atmospheric read that once started I did not want to put down until the final, exhilarating page had been turned. I can’t wait to see where this talented new author will take Elma and her team next. The Creak on the Stairs is Icelandic Noir at its very finest!

Highly recommended.
