Atlanta, Georgia. Present day. A young woman is brutally attacked and left for dead. The police investigate but the trail goes cold. Until a chance assignment takes GBI investigator Will Trent to the state penitentiary, and to a prisoner who says he recognises the MO. The attack looks identical to the one he was accused of eight years earlier. The prisoner’s always insisted that he was innocent, and now he’s sure he has proof. The killer is still out there.

As Will digs into both crimes it becomes clear that he must solve the original case in order to reach the truth. Yet nearly a decade has passed—time for memories to fade, witnesses to vanish, evidence to disappear.

And now he needs medical examiner Sara Linton to help him hunt down a ruthless murderer. But when the past and present collide, everything Will values is at stake.

My Review:

The Silent Wife is the latest in Karin Slaughter’s bestselling series of books featuring GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton. Although part of a series, this is the first one I’ve read and I feel it can be read very well as a standalone. I will, however, be going back to read the previous books in the series as I enjoyed this one so much!

A young woman has been brutally attacked and left for dead. The police have investigated but the trail has gone cold, but then a chance assignment leads investigator Will Trent to a prisoner who says he recognises the MO. The attack is identical to the one he was accused of eight years earlier that he has always said he never committed, and now he believes he has proof that the killer is still out there. And that he could be about to strike again…

As Will begins to look into the case he soon realises that to solve the latest crime he must delve into the past and uncover the truth behind the original attack. And to do that he needs the help of medical examiner Sara Linton.

What follows is a fast paced, gripping and intense thriller that will keep you guessing throughout. The author obviously knows her stuff and her attention to detail is second to none, drawing you into the story, grabbing you by the throat and refusing to let go until the final, thrilling page had been turned.

The Silent Wife is a fascinating read, with characters you can’t help but root for (along with a few you really, really don’t!). I loved the relationship between Will and Sara and can’t wait to learn more about them, both in future books and by going back to the beginning of both of their stories.

Karin Slaughter most definitely lives up to her reputation as one of the best thriller writers out there and I’m looking forward to reading more by her in the future. I honestly don’t know why it’s taken me so long, but wow what a talented author she is! And how lovely to have so many wonderful books to catch up on!

A taut, sometimes gruesome, complex and well plotted thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed, The Silent Wife is a book I would highly recommend.
