Seven Patients. One dark secret.

Phillip Walton has been murdered.

And this is not the first murder.

Jenny Nilson hasn’t seen her former psychiatrist Phillip since she left the Hillside Psychiatric Unit eight years ago. She wanted to forget everything about her time there, so she kept her secrets buried deep. Especially from her new husband.

But now the police are knocking at her door with evidence of her involvement in Phillip’s death. It seems as though everything she’s kept hidden is about to spill out.

Jenny desperately needs to speak to old friends, and old enemies, from those dark years. Because they are the only ones who know what really happened at Hillside, and about the dark secret that Phillip kept for them all – that this is not the first death.

This is not the first murder.

My Review:

Cracked by Louise McCreesh is an impressive debut novel that moves along at a cracking pace, with twists and turns that will keep you guessing throughout.

Jenny Nilson is hiding a dark past. One that not even her new husband knows anything about. But the new life she’s carved for herself is about to come tumbling down when her former psychiatrist Phillip Walton is found murdered. With the finger of suspicion pointing at her, Jenny knows she must do everything she can to keep her secrets buried deep. Especially as Phillip Walton’s Murder is not the first death to occur at Hillside Psychiatric Unit…

Louise McCreesh has written a debut to be proud of. With interesting characters and a story that draws you in from the very first page, this is a book that will keep you on your toes from beginning to end. The writing is strong and the plot is fast moving and intense as the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together, leading to a thrilling and shocking denouement.

Told in two separate timelines, ‘Before’ and After’, Cracked is a book that touches on some dark and disturbing issues, including fragile mental health and self harming. But the author tackles these subjects with sensitivity, taking us on a journey that is not only thrilling but will also make you think.

I found Cracked to be a thoroughly entertaining psychological thriller that touched on some dark and serious issues which the author tackled knowledgeably and with empathy. A fast paced and thrilling debut novel that I would recommend.
