I’m pleased to welcome you today to my stop on the blog tour for M. R. Carey’s The Trials of Koli, second book in The Rampart Trilogy. Thank you to Tracy Fenton and Orbit Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this captivating second installment of the series that began with The Book of Koli. The third and final book in the trilogy will be The Fall of Koli and I can’t wait to read it!
About the book:
The journey through M. R. Carey’s ‘immersive, impeccably rendered world’ (Kirkus) continues in The Trials of Koli – the second book of the Rampart trilogy.
Koli has been cast from his village and into the strange and deadly forest beyond. But he heard a story, once. A story about lost London, and the mysterious tech of the old times that was there. And if Koli can find it, there may be a way for him to redeem himself – by saving what’s left of humanity.
About the author:
M. R. Carey has been making up stories for most of his life. His novel The Girl With All the Gifts was a word-of-mouth bestseller and is now a major motion picture based on his own screenplay. Under the name Mike Carey he has written for both DC and Marvel, including critically acclaimed runs on Lucifer, Hellblazer and X-Men. His creator-owned series The Unwritten appeared regularly in the New York Times graphic fiction bestseller list. He also has several previous novels, games, radio plays, and TV and movie screenplays to his credit.
This second book in The Rampart Trilogy by M. R. Carey continues Koli’s journey as, having been cast out from the village he grew up in, he tries to navigate his way alone through a post apocalyptic world. It isn’t a book you can read as a standalone as you really need to have read the first book in the series to get the most out of The Trials of Koli. So if you haven’t read The Book of Koli yet I would urge you to stop reading this review and go and read it now! It’s a rich and immersive read that tells you everything you need to know about Koli and what has brought him to this point in the story.
M. R. Carey has written yet another fascinating and intricately woven tale that draws you in from the outset. From the very first page I was instantly transported back into the world of Koli as if I’d never left. And even though I wouldn’t say this is a fast paced book, the bleak post apocalyptic world that Koli finds himself in is brought vividly to life as we learn even more about the history of the Ramparts.
Koli is a character you can’t help but like and root for as he searches for lost London and the mysterious tech that is said to be found there. He faces a perilous journey fraught with danger, but hopes that if he can find what he’s looking for he will be able to redeem himself – and save what’s left of humanity.
M. R. Carey has built a rich and multilayered world that captivated me from beginning to end. I was mesmerised by the beautiful writing and gorgeous imagery of The Trials of Koli and loved every word of this second installment of the series. I can’t wait to read the third and final part of the trilogy to see how the story (and Koli’s journey) will end!
A superbly written dystopian series of books that I would highly recommend, I look forward to being able to review the entire trilogy as a whole once The Fall of Koli has been released.
