My Review:
Unhinged is the third in the Blix & Ramm crime thriller series by Norwegian authors Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger. Death Deserved, the first book in the series, was a complete triumph that was closely followed by the excellent Smoke Screen. Now Blix and Ramm are back in Unhinged and wow, what a fantastic read it is! With twists, turns, shocks and surprises throughout, this is a book that starts off with a bang and remains unrelentingly tense until the very last page has been turned.
This time police officer Alexander Blix and blogger Emma Ramm are rocked by the execution style murder of one of their own that has far reaching repercussions, not only for Blix, but also for his family, too. With a man shot and killed, Blix and Ramm under interrogation and Iselin’s life hanging in the balance, is there anyone that Blix is able to trust? And has the right man been killed or is the murderer still out there?
With the case taking a dark and devastating turn, the unlikely duo of Blix and Ramm are thrown together once again, determined to get to the bottom of who killed Sofia Kovic and why. With feelings running high and the tension ratcheting up to breaking point, will Blix and Emma be able to solve the case before time runs out?
What follows is an exciting and fast paced thriller that kept me on my toes throughout. The two main protagonists are as fascinating as ever, their descent into a world rocked by grief changing the dynamic of their relationship and exposing facets of their personalities that we’ve never seen before.
With a complex cast of characters and a storyline that is even darker and more intense than ever before, Unhinged is a breathtakingly tense and gripping thriller that has taken this fantastic and hard hitting series to a whole new level.
Skilfully translated by Megan Turney, this is Nordic Noir at its very best and is yet another worthy addition to what is fast becoming one of my favourite genres to read. I can’t wait to see what Thomas Enger and Jørn Lier Horst have in store for us next!
