About the book:

The Secret Voices
They said they’d keep me safe.
They said, ‘It’s okay, Hannah. You know you can trust me.’
They lied.
When eight-year-old Hannah Perry goes missing in the small Suffolk village of St Just, the community is rocked. Heading up the investigation is Acting DS Rob Minshull, but he’s out of his depth in a case that seems to mirror the disappearance of a young boy, seven years ago.
That search ended in unimaginable tragedy…and Minshull is praying that history won’t be repeated.
But with an investigation full of dead ends, and a kidnapper taunting the police with sinister deliveries of Hannah’s belongings and cryptic notes, the young girl’s life hangs perilously in danger.
Until Dr Cora Lael enters the picture. A psychologist with a unique ability, Cora’s rare gift allows her to sense emotions attached to discarded objects. When she is shown the first of Hannah’s belongings, she hears the child’s piercing scream.
With few leads on the case, could Cora prove to be Hannah’s only hope? And as time runs out, can they find Hannah before history repeats itself…?
A twisty, original and utterly gripping detective thriller that fans of James Oswald and LJ Ross will love.
Don’t miss the crime thriller debut from the bestselling women’s fiction author, Miranda Dickinson.

My Review:
I love nothing more than to sink my teeth into a brand new series of books and this debut crime novel by acclaimed romantic fiction author Miranda Dickinson writing as MJ White did not disappoint.
Dr Cora Lael is a psychologist with a difference. A synaesthete who can sense the emotions of people from their discarded belongings, Cora is able to help DS Rob Minshull move forward with his investigation into missing eight year old Hannah in ways no one else can. Seen by some as something of a charlatan, Cora is nevertheless determined to help in the only way she knows how. This aspect of the story is fascinating and brings a uniqueness to the series that I find refreshing, taking the traditional psychological crime thriller and adding a new and different spin to it that I love.
With parallels to a case that happened seven years previously with a tragic outcome, MJ White’s writing is hypnotic, with the suspense building and the tension ratcheting up to almost breaking point as the search for missing eight year old Hannah continues.
With a rich and varied cast of characters that you can’t help but like, the relationship between Cora and DS Rob Minshull is the one that I found myself drawn to the most and I look forward to seeing how this grows and develops as the series continues.
With fascinating characters and a storyline with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes throughout, The Secret Voices is a strong opening chapter in what I hope will be the first of many and I loved it.
Highly recommended.
